First week of school over, I have NO idea how many are left :)

So we started school this week. Yeah! Kim is in middle school and has LOVED it so far. Her least favorite thing is that she's tired a lot because we are getting up at 6:00 am to be ready in time. She is very organized - makes her own lunch the night before, gets herself up and ready, checks her school planner all the time, and gets her homework done (so far...). She ran the mile and wants to improve her time, so we are going to practice at least once a week at home as well as at school.

Abby seems to be enjoying school. She has also jumped on the "make her own lunch" bandwagon. It's fabulous! Now if we could just get something more than crackers and cookies in there... She is starting ice skating lessons next week, so watch out Olympians!

Eric had a great first day of kindergarten. He gave his teacher an apple (all his own idea). I guess there were quite a few parents in the room when he gave it to her and they all thought it was very sweet. I figure he'll probably need all the points he can get. He flew through the pre-screening last week, so I'm not really worried about him in that way. He had quite a challenging soccer game on Saturday, though. He wanted to kick the ball hard instead of dribbling it and then got mad when it didn't go it the goal. Then it was too hot. Then they weren't using his ball. Then he kept "falling". Anyway, it can only get better next week, I hope.

Jessica WILL be potty-trained this month. School has started and we have some time before all the volunteering, etc... hits hard. She seems to have her moments of interest. Let's hope it goes quickly. She's certainly smart enough. I was asking her what we should make for Eric when he got home from school. I suggested a grilled cheese sandwich. She said that SHE would eat the grilled cheese sandwich and Eric would get a "boy" cheese sandwich. Crazy girl!

Otherwise, life is good and we are doing pretty well. It's fun to read up on everyone else's doings, so keep writing - I'll try too!

the end of summer :0

Okay, so now it's the end of the summer and I haven't written much.... School starts on the 8th so we have a couple of weeks to play. Kim just had band camp this past week and she is gracing us all with trombone playing. She sounds great! I am being asked to move from the table, so I will have to write more later. Bye!

School's Out for Summer!

We are having fun with no school for a couple of months. Kim and Abby had their Activity Day Girl day camp last week, we went to Birch Bay waterpark (came home with 5 stitches), went to the local parade, went on a hike, went letterboxing, and got ready for a houseguest. Busy weeks.

The girls had a good time I think. They keep singing the songs they learned. I took Eric and Jessica on the hike and they did a great job! They both walked the whole way - it was about 2 miles total I think - and they had friends to walk with to keep them company.

Kim is excited about her basketball camp this week and then we have the ward campout, 4th of July, and our trip to Chicago and Detroit.

June already ?!?!?

Broadway Night was a BLAST! It ran fairly smoothly and we are all still trying to catch up on sleep, cleaning the house, etc...

Last night I went to the temple and did initiatories. I haven't done that in a very long time. It was a fantastic experience. It really made me think about the purposes we have here and the promises we made and blessings we were promised when we did it for ourselves. Reid was out of town so I rode down there with a few others - 4 ladies and the poor husband of one of them. The girls decided to go out to dinner afterwards and we had so much fun. I haven't done that very often and honestly it helped that Reid was gone - no worries about neglecting the sleeping family :)

Kim thinks she's already a 6th grader and is gearing up to pay trombone next year in band. Abby is dying to be in Girl Scouts today so we are in the process of signing her up too. Eric is excited to start kindergarten in the fall at his new school. Jessica won't know what to do all morning with no Eric around to tease.

Reid is gearing up for a busy summer and just got called as the 1st counselor in Young Mens. He's inherited a small group of boys that need a lot of guidance. I think he's up to the task.

Back on track?

Well, we are trying to get things back to normal here - what is normal? I'm working on Broadway Night costumes for the kids and - oh yeah - Reid and I too! I am making a bunch of small aprons, chef hats, lion tails, etc... I really having fun with it, but it sure is busy. I need to make sure my costumes are ready to go as well. The big day is June 6th, so it's coming up fast! Hopefully the kids will learn their songs well.

Kim did her Groovin' with the Grimms performance last week and did a great job on her solo. If I can get on the ball I'll post it on here later. She also had a BLAST following a 6th graders around for a day at the middle school. She was thrilled that some of the 7th graders told her she would be fine because she was "cool". She is taking great care is what she is wearing, etc... so I suppose she'll fit right in! I think it's a great way to get kids excited and ready for middle school.

Eric had a small birthday party with 3 of his friends and their younger siblings this week. It was probably the easiest party I've ever done! We met at Burger King, got kids' meals and the kids played for a while. They brought us chocolate pies (the cupcakes were still frozen because some employee forgot to take them out) and we sang Happy Birthday and he opened presents. I paid Burger King and we left. He was thrilled to play with his friends and my house didn't get messier in the process. Fun times!

May is BUSY!

Well, we just had Eric's birthday last week. He had a great day. He got some Legos, a slinky dog, a Nerf gun, and Lego Batman. He was in heaven and didn't want to go to sleep that night because he was so excited about his presents.

Jessica is a funny girl. She loves to play food with her dolls and stuffed animals and likes to set up all the Little People. She annoys her brother constantly and thinks it's rather funny.

Kim is getting ready to leave elementary school. She is excited about her musical performance this week and also Broadway Night in June.

Abby is Abby. Always setting up something in her room. She had a store all set up and ready to go until I broke it to her that we were not going to be allowing strangers to come into her room to buy things from her.

I am done with the school auction. We raised about $6,000 - the only fundraiser of the year to actually bring in what was budgeted. It was a lot of work, but I've only heard good things about it. I will not be doing it next year, so I still have to get a detailed binder together with all the info that I've been storing in my brain. Now on to Broadway Night!

Reid is traveling and busy with lots of things. He is having fun playing Lego Batman with Eric. We are just plugging away - ready for the school year to end.

J-E-S-S-I-C-A

Kim had fun taking this video of Jessica. Enjoy!

Ears, feet, and green toilets

So this week - today actually - we discovered that Abby's earring was stuck in her ear. As in the hoop she had in was lodged partway into her piercing. I guess she hadn't changed them or cleaned them for a few days and she only took the posts out last weekend. She was crying that it hurt and wouldn't let anyone touch her ear to try to get it out. I browsed around online while looking at the walk-in clinic hours and found some sites that talked about using ice to reduce the swelling and numb them a bit. We tried it and were finally able to get it out. She was so sweet. She decided that we needed to pray about it halfway through the process and then afterwards during prayer at family night she remembered on her own to thank Heavenly Father that we were able to get it out. We're going to be better about changing and cleaning from now on.

Kim went roller skating last weekend and came out of it with two HUGE blisters. I think they are better now, but she had trouble walking on them for a couple of days. Now they have peeled and are red. Read her blog to find out more about her.

Eric and Jessica are still coughing a bit but I think they are mostly better. Jessica has mastered spelling her name - at least verbally. She tried her hand at writing a J this week as well.

The leprechaun came to our house and turned half a gallon of milk green, the toilet water green, and locked the cat on the back porch all night (okay, maybe that was one of us). All in all a fun day. We tried to go to McDonald's to get shamrock shakes and their ice cream machine was broken.

I am done with Bingo night at school and now I'm working hard for the auction which is on May 1st. I'll be glad when it's over and I've already told them that I can't do it next year. Maybe I'll just do one thing and call it good. There is a chance I may be helping with a Girl Scout troop for Kim. We'll see....

Amusing Comic Strip

I didn't get the chance to read this yesterday because the girls ran off with the comics, but when I read it today I couldn't stop laughing. Try explaining it appropriately to an 8 yr. old!

I can't be creative with these titles - they all say weird week!

So this week, we had a bunch of interesting things happen. We had more snow, just to remind us it's still winter, and the kids had a few days of snow route buses. We had a lovely time sliding near our house and not being able to stop until the last minute.

Eric was sick on Wednesday and missed school. He's had a lovely cough that shows up mostly at night, but we hope it's almost gone.

On Thursday I had to drive down to airport to bring Reid his forgotten wallet so he could get on the plane at 8:30 am (we left the house at 6:55 and still made it). Kim and Abby got themselves ready for school and even made their own lunches. It's amazing what necessity will do!

That same day I went to kindergarten orientation and had a sitter because Reid was gone. On the way home I stopped at the atm to get money to pay the sitter. It was out of money (luckily I had some at home) and when I got into the van, it wouldn't start. No cranking or anything. It didn't seem like the battery since I had just driven it and I had to get the sitter home - couldn't wait 2 hours for roadside assistance. I called the sitter's mom and she came and brought me home and took her daughter.

So now the van is parked a 15 minute drive away and I need to get back to it to see what we should do. Eric, Jessica, and I were ready to take the bus (single route and the transit center is across the street from the van) but a guy from the ward saw us waiting and took us to the car. He actually does bodywork on cars for a living and know quite a bit about them. He had a jump box in his van and had it ready to go. I put the key in and the van started immediately - without a jump.

Now I'm feeling ridiculous, but I know the van wasn't going to start the night before. As I'm driving away, I notice the check engine light on so I decided to drive it to the Kia dealership to get it fixed. As we were waiting for them to take it from the front drive to the garage to look at it, I noticed the guy having trouble starting it. For once, the car actually acted up for the repairman! They got it to the garage and after a couple of hours of looking at it, testing parts, etc... they decided that the crank sensor was out and the starter was on its way out. Of course, they didn't have either part on hand and one of them wouldn't be in until Wednesday - this all happened on Friday.

I obviously needed a vehicle and the guy was feeling bad for not having the parts, etc... so they let us take their shuttle van (a newer Kia Sedona) until the van was done. I was ready to rent a car, but it's a lot cheaper to get the free one from the dealership! Anyway, the kids LOVE the "new" one. It has lots of buttons to push and a dvd player that we can't get the sound to work on. In fact, we would love to just let them keep our old one and we'll just keep this one :).

I feel very grateful that the Lord was looking out for us, placed help in our path, and helped us find a way to make it all work out. I don't usually ask for help and this forced me to do just that. There seems to be a positive in every difficult situation!

Sun and Snow

So, we had a lovely day or two where the weather was beautiful. We didn't need our jackets during the day and the flowers were coming up. Then Mother Nature decides to have a windy, cold storm and snow this morning. I WANT SPRING! (Oh wait, I think that's what spring in Washington is...) We just hope it doesn't snow when we drive to Utah for Spring Break.

Abby won our game of Settlers of Catan on Friday. We need to buy an expansion set so I can start winning again :) I had a lady at church today tell me that she bought Boggle and she and her husband can't stop playing it! I'm scared to play against them now. I beat them on New Years Eve, like I had 87 points and everyone else had 12. I'm not very nice...

Today at church, Eric gave the prayer and article of faith in Primary. Kim was asked by a member of the Primary Presidency (granted, she's new) when she was going into Young Womens. We had to break the news to her that Kim still has a year and a half in Primary! We also had a kid confessing family sins. He was asked what his dad did when he was sad (meaning when the boy was sad) and he said that when his dad was really mad he gets out a belt and he was talking about the metal parts and spanking. Anyway, the adults changed the subject quickly. Luckily it's one of those families that you wouldn't think of as abusive...

A few weeks ago a little girl said she was going to have a baby sister. She was adopted and I assumed that her mom couldn't have any more, but I asked her at choir that day. The mom said that the little girl WANTS a baby sister and will even pray for one, but they are not having a baby. We love Primary!

A busy week

I think I could make that the title of my blog most weeks! As you know, Abby was baptized yesterday. It was a great day and she seemed to enjoy it all, especially the fun afterwards at our house! She is a great little girl and we are glad to have her in our family.

I have just been tired all week and now it looks like I'm coming down with a cold, so hopefully it doesn't work it's way around the house! Luckily I already have a doctor appointment tomorrow so if there's any other sickness going on we should catch it then.

Jessica had a great birthday. She got a dollhouse and loves to pull it out and play with all the pieces. Maybe it will stay in her room eventually! She also got a twin bed - she's actually been in the crib - and loves her princess sheets. The best part was that she is actually staying in her bed every night. All my other kids had at least a few nights of crazy in and out for hours on end. She just snuggles into her bed and sings along with her Primary cd. Now to get her potty trained....

It was fun to have grandma Heaton here. We got a little mending done even! Thanks for visiting!

I can't think of anything else to write - boring today! Have a great week!

Catching up!

Abby says I should write I love Reid. Isn't she sweet! Well, between Christmas and my computer being in the shop, I haven't written for a while. Oh well, back to my old routine I hope. Abby had a great birthday, I think. She got to get her ears pierced, took a friend to Chuck E. Cheese, and is getting ready to get baptized this weekend. Jessica is VERY excited about her birthday. She's getting a "princess bed" which consists of princess sheets and a comforter. I will also paint her room eventually, but it won't be before her birthday!

Kim is crazy. She reads all the time and plays computer games too much. She failed her scoliosis test and hearing test, but the doctor doesn't seem too concerned. She will be tested again in 6 months. Kim says her spine is a roller coaster. Kim is going to the Young Authors conference in a month. She has to have a book of poems written by her for that day. She's well on her way. She also thinks she's a big 5th grader. She went to learn about the band program at the middle school last week and I am going to a middle school orientation next week. She's an old lady!

Eric told Jessica to "take a hunt" the other day. I suspect he meant take a hike. We were getting ready to plant some flowers this week and he insisted that we all needed some "hay hats". I convinced him that we could plant the flowers without "hay hats." He's getting VERY excited about kindergarten. He loves to do addition flash cards as long as the answer isn't more than 10 (he only has 10 fingers).

Abby wants Reid to make gorilla poops today. Kim says I can't spell. This blog is not making much sense with Kim and Abby sitting on either side of me. I got roped into helping with a booth at kindergarten orientation and also helping with the nominating committee for PTA next year. I just help figure out who is willing and able to run for office. We don't ever have people fighting over jobs.

We are excited for grandma Heaton to come for a couple of days. Hopefully the kids will be wonderfully kind to each other the whole time!
